Course Description:

This course introduces the elements of Visual Basic 6.0 and covers event-driven design, user-interface considerations, and the program development environment of VISUAL BASIC 6.0 running under Windows.

Topics include controls and their properties, variables, selection structures, repetition structures, arrays and file handling. (Prerequisite: CS101 and MA108 or higher).

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the fundamentals of the Visual Basic OOED (object-orientated/event-driven) programming language.
2. Design and build a graphical user interface using GUI design tips.
3. Plan and create interactive Windows applications using introductory programming concepts such as variables and constants, selection structures, repetitive structures, variable arrays, sequential and random file handling.

Performance Criteria and Evaluation:

Attendance/Course Preparation:

Students are expected to:

1. Attend class regularly and promptly.
2. Read tutorial lesson material and answer tutorial questions prior to the beginning of class, and be prepared to participate in class discussions.
3. Students are expected to inform instructor of any anticipated absence via email or by telephone. Absent students are responsible for finding out what they had missed in class.

Assignments:

Students are expected to:

1. Complete all lesson step-by-step tutorials (brown boxes) prior to coming to class.

2. Complete assigned Visual Basic programs by the due date (one week after the lesson has been introduced). **NO** late programs will be accepted unless other arrangements are communicated with instructor prior to the absence.

3. Upload the *.frm and *.vbp files for each step-by-step tutorial exercises and assigned Visual Basic program to a designated server and placed in the student's folder.

Quizzes/Midterm/Final:

Students are expected to complete quizzes (every Thursday), midterm and final exam as scheduled. **NO** make-up will be allowed unless other arrangements are communicated with instructor prior to absence.

Performance Assessment:

Students are responsible for reviewing their progress periodically. Any errors should be brought to my attention immediately by sending an email with the error in question.

Visual Basic Programs, Tutorial Step-by-Step Exercises, Quizzes, Midterm and Final Exam are assigned points and will be counted towards the final grade and distributed as follows:

  • Storage Device: Zip Disk (250MB or lower), or Flash Drive. (See page xxi for labeling).
    • Files can be downloaded from ftp://guam.packet.org/CS104
    • Double-click on the Data Folder.
    • Click on the folder to be copied.
    • From the File Menu, select Copy to Folder.
    • Select your storage device, then OK.

Emergency Policy:
In the event classes are canceled as a result of a power outage, water outage, bomb scare, typhoon, or other natural disaster, all classes missed will be made up by: (1) extending the class meeting time an additional 15-20 minutes until the contact hours missed are met or (2) scheduling the class(es) on a Friday or Saturday.

Accommodative Services for Students with Disabilities:

Students with disabilities can be provided with auxiliary aids when needed for success in attaining their academic/vocational goals. If classes required by students with special disabilities have been scheduled to meet in relatively inaccessible facilities, the College will either reschedule the classes to accessible facilities or make special arrangements to ensure ready access by students with disabilities to those classes. Students with disabilities are urged to contact the Accommodative Services Coordinator (735-5579 or TDD: 734-8324) well in advance of registration for classes.
